Making Big ‘Coil-and-Throw’ Pots using the Throwmaster Workshops

Where:  ART & DESIGN STUDIO, 2/14 Rafferty Road, Mandurah, Western Australia

Workshop Participation: Number of participants is confined to 6 students

Participants should be moderately skilled at throwing (can throw a 150 mm cylinder within about 5 minutes)

The workshop is not suitable for beginners

Cost: $260 for whole workshop

Clay and studio facilities are provided for use during the workshop

The workshop is intended for instructional purposes only. Students may take home what they have made at the workshop but firing or glazing is not included

Light refreshments – tea and coffee and biscuits will be available

Lunch is not included. It is recommended that you bring your own lunches as food outlets in the area have very limited options, particularly if you have special dietary needs

Workshop Program

Morning session 9:30 am – 12:00 noon

Demonstration covering:

• Review of throwing fundamentals

• What equipment and tools you will need

• Choice of clay for coil-and-throw

• The foundation pot

• Throwing dry

• The influence of accelerated drying

• The Throwmaster and its use

• The coil-and-throw sequence

• Shaping and form control

• Traps to avoid

Afternoon session 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm

With one-on-one instruction and remedial coaching, in this session you will be working on the pottery wheel, applying the techniques and methods covered in the morning session. You will also be working on improving and refining your technique with a focus on development of good form when making large pots.
